Spluegen village

Outskirts of Spluegen village in front of the local cheese dairy with a  view to the north of the village. View over the Rhine bridge towards the village center. Left, you’ll ride towards San Bernardino pass, right towards Thusis and Via Mala.

Several after we have left the village border up the southern slopes of the  Rhine valley we llok down to Spluegen and Upper Rhine. The picture was taken with a Nikon F301 on a slide film and then scanned.

Same position as the previous image, but this time taken with a Nikon D300 in 2010. The pass road runs right behind us uphill into a side canyon.

The first curved stage has been made and we have reached the high plateau Valley  of Tambo Alp. In the background, you can see the already the pass summit.

This is the second curved section that leads up to the border crossing. We look towards the east into the valley of Tamboalp. The road winds here up on bare slopes uphill like a snake.

One turn further on, this time facing north. Spluegen is down in the Valley and the view focuses here on the clod Horn mountain (2.732m). The pass summit is located behind us.

This picture was taken in August 2010. Sweeping driveway to the north ramp on the Swiss side with views back to the Rhine Valley. The pass is  behind the viewer.

Same location as the picture on the left, but rotated by 180° to the south overlooking the pass summit, which can be seen in the small incision. The road continues over the summit on sloap uphill, seen on the right.

Four serpentines below the Swiss border station and the hospice. You can see the buildings up in the center of the image. The pass road continues right past the buildings in a tight turn.

This is the Italian border crossing, looking north. The picture was taken in 1998. In 2010 the building was already turned down and the border station no longer operational.

A little further south , a valley on the Italian side opens with a deserted hospice. Looking south towards the small village of Monte Spluga

Few turns before reaching Montespluga, looking south to the lake. Monte Spluga is located just 2mls behind the pass summit and the Italian border.

We are now looking from the southern dam over to the village of Monte Spluga. The image can be downloaded therefore here as XXL so you can see the details. Behind us, the road leads down to Chiavenna.

Same camera location as the previous image but now looking south. You can see good the narrow pass road how it winds through through between the old buildings and the  pastures.

Chiavenna roundabout. Start and end point of the Spluegenpass road in Italy. The building right in the picture is the small ice cream cafe. Right of the terrace you can park the bikes in direkt sight.
