Starting point of the Karerpass, the capital of the province South Tyrol - Bolzano. Here is also the starting point of the Great Dolomite Alps Panoramic Road to Cortina d’Ampezzo over the Karerpass. This picture was taken from the Mendelpass pass road approx. 4mls before you reach the summit and shows Bolzana and the Karrerpass entry point on the right hand side of the picture.

When you follow the sign Eggental (ital. Val d’Ega) all the time, you will automatically pass by this point where we took the picture. It’s the deep canyon of the Eggen valley just a short distance before you reach the village Welschnofen where the pass road then climbs steep uphill.

You will find the Karersee (Careza lake) when you ride up from Bolzano a view serpentines behind the village Welschnofen. In spring time this little lake is nearly empty but this picture was taken in October 2005 when the lake had enough water as usual in autumn time, to generate a good picture with the mountains mirroring in the lake. The classical tourist picture.

Millions of pictures have been taken from this point - Lago di Carezza. This photo was shot in the first week of September after a snow night where we had snowfall down to 1.500m. The snow was gone again two days later and we were again up in the 24°C.
You won’t miss that place just some serpentines after Welschnofen since it is directly right hand side of the road and you will see lots of hikers and tourists.

That’s the summit of the Passo Costalunga, or in German language Karerpass. We look towards the Latemar mountain, nearly directly southwards. In the rear of the photographer is the Rosengarten massif. On the right hand side approx 2mls out of the picture - the Karersee, Nigerpass, Eggen valley and Welschnofen. This picture was taken in July 2006.

Pass summit looks like this. If you ride to the right side you will reach Bolzano and if you take a left you will reach down to the Fassa valley where you then can enter in Canazei the famous Sella Ronda motorbike tour or climb up the Fedaja pass road. This picture was taken in September 2002.
