The Sarntaler Alps are a clearly defined mountain section in the heart of South Tyrol. In the west these mountains are surrounded by the Passer and the Etsch river and in the east by the Eisack river. That’s all you need to know for orientation on you tours. The Passeiertal valley runs from Sankt Leonhard village down towards Merano, the Etschtal valley from Merano down towards Bolzano and the Eisacktal valley from the Brennero pass down towards Bolzano. Not the Dolomiti mountains are the center of South Tyrol. They stretch through the counties of Veneto and Trentino and only a small portion of it is located on the ground of South Tyrol county.
Independent from which direction you travel to that region, like from the north across the Brennero pass, the Timmelsjoch pass or the Reschenpass through the Vinschgau valley, you will always have the Sarntaler mountain region directly in front of you.
The most northern part of that mountain region is the Jaufenpass and the Sarntaler Alps are cut right in the middle by the Penserjoch pass road. This road gives you the best impression of the different altitudes, the alpine climate and the rough vegetation of this alpine region. Various outstanding motorbike day-tours can be setup to learn more about this great mountain region and it will never become long-winded. One very famous route is if you ride from Bolzano on the old Brennero pass road towards the Brennero pass up to the village Sterzing where you take a left across the Penserjoch pass back to Bolzano. Or you ride across the Ritten mountain through wineyards with an unbelievable view down to the Eisack valley and over to the Rosegarden mountain chain. A hidden route only known by local people leads you down into the valley, where you then follow the Penserjoch pass road across the Penserjoch pass and Jaufenpass This tour delivers best riding fun with endless curves and serpentines with great country impressions.
If you have challenged the well constructed winding route up to the Ritten mountain, many riders turn around to do that fantastic road again. The outstanding view through vineyards down into the Eisacktal valley, in the background the Schlern mountain and Rosegarden rock, the great route in front of the motorbike tire and the smell of the vines. The way down across the Ritten into the Sarntal valley is unbelievable as well. You ride through beautiful woods and we highly recommend to make that tour either during crack of dawn or during afterglow. There are no words to describe this.
