Region 6 - Central Switzerland and Gotthard mountain

overview map of Region 6No Swiss would ever have the idea to talk about "Central Switzerland" when talking about the center of his country. For the Swiss themselves, the area of the Gotthard and region is called "Innerschweiz" (the inside of Switzerland). This has an important historical background. In  1291, the cantons of Schwyz, URI, Zug, Lucerne, and Unterwalden took the Covenant from which the present Confederation is coming from. The actual basic model of democracy.

It all started off in the 13th Century, when the Schoellenen canyon located, in front of Andermatt at Gotthard mountain, was the first time crossed by humans. The construction of the Devil's Bridge over the gorge was the breakthrough. This gave the small forest sites on Lake Lucerne unimagined economic and political importance. Even today, the Sankt Gotthard is regarded as the most important link from north to south. In Andermatt three important Pass routes meet at the base of the Gotthard Massif. Sankt Gotthard Pass (2.108m/7,153ft), Operalppass (2.044m/6,706ft), and the Furka Pass (2.431m/7,976ft). Even the rivers that originate here, Reuss, Rhone, Rhine and Ticino flow in different oceans. For the motorbiker, the area is a paradise, does he find highly compressed a noble elite of the most beautiful and highest alpine passes with endless curves, pure fun and what is even more important, with a mountain range that’s outstanding.

And don’t believe that you know this area when you have done the classical Furka - Grimsel - Susten roundtrip. Then you have made just the so called “Japanese foto session trip” that everyone does who is just using large scale maps with 1:750:000 and greater. Too bad, because then you unfortunately miss all the uphill drives to Oberaarsee at Grimsel Pass or the uphill drive to Lago di Luzzone behind Olivione on Lukmanier.
So, when traveling to this region, then order the  General Map of Mairs Geographic publishing in scale 1:200,000 through Amazon and discover the hidden corners of the Central Switzerland “Innerschweiz”.
